LexPride Movie Night: Brother Outsider

  • Lexington Community Center (Dining Room) 39 Marrett Road Lexington, MA, 02421 United States (map)

Brother Outsider chronicles the life of Bayard Rustin, strategic visionary and unsung hero of the Black civil rights movement — and an openly gay man during the oppressively homophobic 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. He also worked for other kinds of civil rights, including gay civil rights.

President Barack Obama posthumously awarded Bayard Rustin the Presidential Medal of Honor, which was accepted by Rustin’s life partner Walter Nagle. Rustin did not live to see legalization of gay marriage.

Coretta Scott King once said that there would have been no MLK without Bayard Rustin, but he did not receive visible recognition because of his sexuality. Come watch this film and give him the recognition he deserves.
