Building Community to Support LGBTQIA+ Youth: An Interactive Discussion for Parents and Guardians

Do you wonder how to create a home that celebrates clear communication between youth and their families about sexuality and gender? We will create a space to explore these questions and learn about the resources in our community to affirm all of the children in our schools. Together we’ll explore what gender and sexuality mean today and places to find role models of varied backgrounds for us and those in our care. We’ll also delve into ways to process our feelings about youth development and the risks they take to be themselves in ways that nurture healthy communication, good boundaries, and trust. Parents, guardians and support networks are all invited on this journey with us.

This program will be led by members of the Arlington Rainbow Commission and LexPride.

50 Years Since Stonewall: Our Modern History

For the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, the Lexington Historical Society, LexPride, and Greater Boston PFLAG are hosting an exciting modern history event.

Dr. Gary Bailey, a highly sought-after speaker and professor, will engage us with a much more nuanced understanding of LGBTQ+ history since Stonewall than we typically see. He will also moderate a panel of Lexington residents of varying LGBTQ+ and other identities who actually lived this history.

This one-of-a-kind event is not to be missed. Please bring yourself, your friends, your families, your neighbors, your pets (just kidding, no pets except service animals), and anyone else you can think of.

This event is free and open to all. The Depot is wheelchair accessible. Speakers will use microphones, and assistive listening devices will be available. Please let us know if you have any accessibility concerns.

LexPride Movie Night: Brother Outsider

Brother Outsider chronicles the life of Bayard Rustin, strategic visionary and unsung hero of the Black civil rights movement — and an openly gay man during the oppressively homophobic 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. He also worked for other kinds of civil rights, including gay civil rights.

President Barack Obama posthumously awarded Bayard Rustin the Presidential Medal of Honor, which was accepted by Rustin’s life partner Walter Nagle. Rustin did not live to see legalization of gay marriage.

Coretta Scott King once said that there would have been no MLK without Bayard Rustin, but he did not receive visible recognition because of his sexuality. Come watch this film and give him the recognition he deserves.

Free and open to all.

An American Story: Race Amity and The Other Tradition
Jun

An American Story: Race Amity and The Other Tradition

For Race Amity Day, Lexington’s Human Rights Committee is hosting the film An American Story: Race Amity and The Other Tradition.

The primary purpose of the documentary project, An American Story: Race Amity and The Other Tradition, is to impact the public discourse on race. To move the discourse from the “blame/grievance/rejection” cycle to a view from a different lens, the lens of “amity/collaboration/access and equity.”

In contrast to the lens that focuses exclusively on the racist traditions that are rooted in America’s social history, the moral counterweight of close, loving, friendship and collaboration, which have always been present in our history, represents “the other tradition.” This “other tradition” is a source of inspiration and presents models of behavior that are instructional and include unknown and uncelebrated legacies to be absorbed and emulated across generations of present day Americans.

The documentary discusses the “better in us” a needed collective perspective in the current climate of national disunity across racial, religious, and political lines. This has significant implications for addressing public issues from immigration to health care and the myriad of governmental, educational, business, and religious challenges that we must successfully meet to weave the fabric of unity which is indispensable to survival as a nation.
